Choosing The Suspension Kit

Time to drop it – but how?

Perhaps the most impactful single upgrade for any car is installing a coilover suspension kit. Even a slight drop in ride height drastically changes the car’s appearance – and improves stability thanks to a lower center of gravity.

Choosing the right product not only improves handling but also increases comfort and precision during sporty driving. The end result often feels like driving an entirely new car!

But things can also go wrong. If you pick something that doesn’t match your needs – or worse, swap quality OEM parts for cheap junk – the car might end up driving like a creaky old bed on a gravel road.

Springs vs Coilovers

Springs – Shocks – Coilovers: What’s the difference?

Suspension upgrades generally come in one of these three forms:

Stage 1 – Lowering Springs

The easiest and most cost-effective solution. High-quality lowering springs that reduce ride height and improve performance over stock. The car sits lower and feels more planted.

Contrary to common belief, good-quality lowering springs do not reduce comfort. In fact, they often make the ride feel less harsh and more composed.

Top choices: Eibach, H&R, Vogtland, KW Suspension – all available through us.

Stage 2 – Lowering Springs & Shock Absorbers

If your stock dampers are worn out, it’s a good idea to replace them at the same time with sportier, possibly adjustable dampers. The result is an even more balanced and improved driving experience.

Top choices: Eibach B12 Kit, Bilstein, Koni, KW Suspension, Vogtland

Stage 3 – Coilover Suspension

Coilovers (also called coil-over kits or adjustable dampers) typically combine height-adjustable shocks with integrated springs, though separate spring designs exist too.

  • With height adjustment, you can fine-tune the car’s stance and feel to match your preferences.
  • Adjust ride height for different seasons, wheels, or just for fun – it’s all possible.
  • Unmatched handling and performance – as long as the kit is high quality.

Important: Quality varies drastically between coilover kits. Some cheap height-adjustable kits on the market, in our opinion, are not safe or suitable for road use. They may feel harsh, unstable, or wear out in just 1–2 years due to poor components.

The Enthusiast’s Top Choice – BC Racing Coilovers

Our best-selling suspension upgrade by far is the BC Racing coilover kit – typically the BR series, which delivers excellent performance both on the street and for occasional track use.

For more demanding drivers, the lineup includes a wide variety of options: digressive valving, external reservoirs, and 1-way, 2-way, or 3-way adjustable damping – even fully custom-built kits.

Precision-Tuned Per Vehicle

BC Racing coilovers are designed for specific car models, ensuring easy installation and guaranteed compatibility. Every vehicle is different in weight and geometry, so spring rates and dampers are carefully selected to match each application.

There are also “true coilover” options available for vehicles where the spring and damper are originally separate – giving even greater adjustability.

Extensive Adjustability for a Fair Price

BC Racing stands out for how it implements height adjustment. Unlike many competitors, height is not adjusted by changing spring preload, but by modifying the actual length of the damper body. This way, ride comfort and shock performance remain consistent regardless of ride height.

Preload can still be adjusted separately, allowing you to fine-tune corner weighting and grip – especially important for performance-focused setups or if your car has a non-standard weight distribution.

With 30 levels of damping adjustment, the setup can be tailored precisely to your needs – whether for daily driving or weekend track days.

Model Variants for Different Needs

The most popular series is BR, which is perfect for street driving and occasional track use – meeting the needs of most drivers.

For special use cases, the following variants are available:

EXTREME DROP – Slammed stance for show and style
If you’re after a lower ride height, the “Extreme Drop” version includes shorter and stiffer springs for even more drop.

BR TRACK
A version tuned for more aggressive track driving.

DS – Digressive Valving
Features digressive pistons that handle small bumps more tightly, giving a more “planted” and firm road feel than BR – ideal for fast-paced tarmac use.

Motorsport Coilovers
Choose the 2-way adjustable ER series, 3-way ZR series, or fully custom race-spec builds for serious competition use.

Wheel alignment

After installation, it’s absolutely essential to perform a four-wheel alignment to ensure optimal handling and tire wear.

Examples of BC Racing Coilovers

BC Racing BR Series
BR – By far the most popular series.
The BR series is our best-seller and the optimal choice for most use cases thanks to its excellent price-to-feature ratio. Perfect for both daily driving and light track use. A great compromise between sporty feel and everyday comfort. Many models are also available in an Extreme Drop version for those seeking a more aggressive stance.

BC Racing DS
DS – For the slightly more demanding driver.
Featuring a digressive piston, this damper responds more precisely even to slower suspension movements – providing sharper feedback and reduced body roll in spirited driving.

BC Racing ER
ER – External reservoir damper for high-performance use.
The added reservoir increases damping capacity and performance. The ER series offers 2-way adjustability, allowing you to independently tune compression and rebound settings.

BC Racing HM
HM – Adds an upside-down front strut design (available for some rear setups too).
Reduces unsprung weight and increases rigidity. Available only for vehicles with McPherson-type suspension setups.

BC Racing ZR
ZR – The flagship model for extreme motorsport use.
The ZR series features 3-way adjustable damping: 30-click rebound, 15-click low-speed compression, and 12-click high-speed compression. McPherson-type applications come with an upside-down strut to minimize unsprung weight.
