Forged pistons – a topic every car enthusiast has at least heard their friends talk about, if nothing else.
In most engines, the original pistons are made from cast metal due to factors like cost and faster production.
When viewed under a microscope, cast metal is more porous and has a less uniform structure compared to forged metal, which is compressed into a dense, solid form. As a result, forged pistons are significantly stronger and particularly well-suited for performance builds.
Typically, a modern 4-cylinder engine will start to require forged pistons around the 400–500 hp range. In larger engines, OEM pistons can sometimes handle higher outputs, depending on the application.
