What changes on GTI models

The turbo inlet is the final airflow restriction before the compressor. The Mk8 GTI typically uses the IS20 turbo, while Golf R and S3 models use the larger IS38 turbo. Because of this, inlet upgrades are often especially beneficial on tuned GTI setups. A larger inlet reduces vacuum at the turbo inlet and can improve both power output and turbo response.

Construction
