Why the Original Hydraulic Tensioner Fails
All early 058 1.8T engines use a hydraulic tensioner with a gas-charged piston. These units commonly fail due to an undersized O-ring that cracks, leaks, or degrades with age, releasing hydraulic pressure instantly. When this happens, the timing belt loses tension and engine failure occurs immediately. Aftermarket non-OE tensioners often make the issue worse with poor tolerances and cheap seals.

The IE Manual Timing Belt Tensioner Kit eliminates the hydraulic piston assembly entirely. The CNC-machined aluminum idler bracket and manual tensioner allow the belt tension to be set mechanically and locked into place—similar to systems used on later 2.0T FSI engines. Maintenance Notes
