This part is commonly known as a driveshaft damper, flex disc or guibo. It is a driveline coupling located at the ends of the driveshaft, designed to absorb vibration and shock loads between the transmission and the differential.
As long as the damper remains intact, there is no reason to replace it. However, the harder the vehicle is driven — and especially when power levels are increased — the rubber flex disc can deteriorate over time, crack, and eventually fail. This often results in driveline play, knocking noises, and harshness.
The stronger M-model flex disc is sometimes used as an upgrade on popular models such as the M140i, M240i, or M340i. On higher power setups, the standard damper can become a weak point, and this part offers a reinforced OEM solution without resorting to aftermarket solid mounts.
