Ultra Racing Chassis Braces – What Does Chassis Stiffening Actually Do?
Coilovers, tyres and wheels are usually the first things that come to mind when improving a car’s handling. But there’s one pretty important part holding all of that together that is easily forgotten – the chassis itself.
A car’s chassis isn’t some magically rigid, completely inflexible structure. Cornering, braking, acceleration and uneven roads all put forces through it, causing the structure to flex and twist slightly one way or another.
After all, the chassis wasn’t exactly designed at the factory for everything a tuning-minded enthusiast might eventually put it through.
Once you start adding power and grip, chassis flex is something you can quite literally begin to feel through the steering wheel on a demanding twisty road or during a track day.
This is where Ultra Racing comes in. Headquartered in Malaysia and operating since 2002, the company specialises in chassis and suspension bracing for everything from street cars to competition use. The range includes more than 2,000 different braces, from traditional front strut braces to underbody reinforcement and anti-roll bars.
So what are we trying to achieve with chassis braces?
The basic idea is simple – connect structural points of the car that we don’t want moving relative to each other.
A classic front strut brace is a good example. Without one, the upper mounting points of the front suspension are connected mainly through the car’s own body structure. Add a rigid brace between them, and there’s less movement between those points when the chassis is under load.
This is probably one of the most popular chassis upgrades around, and also one of the easiest to actually notice on just about any car.
The idea isn’t to make the suspension “harder”, but to let the springs, dampers and tyres do their job without unwanted movement happening in the chassis itself.
On a normal street car, this can simply mean a slightly tighter and more precise feel. On a track-day or competition car, chassis rigidity becomes increasingly important as the forces going through the suspension and tyres rise to a completely different level – and at that point, we’re already starting to talk about actual grip and how far you can push it.
Front strut brace – the classic first upgrade
A front upper strut brace is exactly what the rather technical name suggests: a transverse brace connecting the upper front suspension mounting points. It’s probably the best-known product in the Ultra Racing range.
On many cars, it’s also a refreshingly straightforward enthusiast upgrade. Pop the bonnet, bolt the brace onto the factory mounting points and off you go. The exact installation naturally depends on the car, but in many applications it really is a simple bolt-on part without much fuss.
If you want to try one part and see what chassis stiffening can do for your own car, a front strut brace is often the natural place to start.
Lower braces – adding stiffness down in the basement
Ultra Racing also makes a wide range of Front Lower, Mid Lower and Rear Lower braces fitted underneath the car. These connect important mounting points in the floor structure and subframes, helping to reduce chassis twisting during cornering and acceleration.
Unfortunately, these might not be quite as visible or impressive to look at as a bright white strut brace sitting proudly in the engine bay, but from a handling point of view they can be very interesting indeed. Especially once the car already has firmer suspension and plenty of tyre grip, reinforcing the chassis starts making more and more sense as part of the overall package.
Wheel hop, changing suspension geometry under load, chassis flex through a hard corner – it’s all part of the same conversation.
Rear braces – same recipe, other end of the car
Rear Upper and Rear Lower braces are also available for the rear suspension and body structure. Once again, the idea is the same: reduce unwanted movement between structural points and give the suspension a more rigid foundation to work from.
Of course, not every car needs the entire Ultra Racing catalogue fitted in one go. For a street car, one or two carefully chosen braces may be exactly the right upgrade. With a car being built for track use, the whole concept can be taken considerably further.
Anti-roll bars do exactly what the name suggests
Ultra Racing also manufactures Anti-Roll Bars that are stiffer than the original factory bars. Their operating principle is different from chassis braces: an anti-roll bar links the suspension movement on opposite sides of the same axle and resists body roll during cornering.
And there’s one particularly interesting thing about anti-roll bars – they can have a surprisingly large effect on whether a car tends towards oversteer or understeer.
Fit a stiffer rear anti-roll bar and, generally speaking, you’ll end up with a car that’s more willing to rotate and turn into a corner. Go the other way and the effect shifts accordingly.
And what about Fender Bars hidden inside the wings?
Now we’re diving into the deep end. On a more extensively modified street or competition car, you may also come across Fender Bars. These reinforce the front body structure by connecting the A-pillar area to the front chassis structure.
They’re probably not the first purchase for a Sunday cruiser, and unfortunately you can’t exactly pop the bonnet and proudly show them off to your mates. But with stiffer suspension, serious track use or a more extensively developed chassis setup, they definitely have their place.
So why Ultra Racing?
It’s pretty easy to understand Ultra Racing’s popularity once you’ve handled the products yourself. The concept is straightforward: proper steel braces designed specifically for individual car models, sensible pricing and a huge range of applications.
The mounting plates used in Ultra Racing braces are made from 4–5 mm steel plate, while the tubular structures use wall thicknesses of 1.2–1.6 mm. The products aren’t simply designed on a computer and thrown into a box either. Ultra Racing says its designs undergo compression, torsion and bending tests, followed by track testing before entering mass production.
Motorsport has also been part of Ultra Racing’s work for a long time. The company has its own Motorsport Division, through which its products are used and developed in disciplines including circuit racing, autocross and drifting.
That also goes some way towards explaining why you’ll see the same distinctive white braces in the engine bay of an everyday enthusiast’s street car as you will in a competition car.
One, two, three – build the whole set one piece at a time
Perhaps one of the best things about Ultra Racing products is that you can take the whole thing exactly as far as you want – and do it one step at a time.
A normal street car might start with nothing more than a front strut brace. Next up could be an underbody brace or a rear brace. And if the car starts spending more weekends at the circuit than in the shopping centre car park, there are plenty of ways to take chassis reinforcement considerably further.
Many of the products make use of the car’s existing mounting points, which also makes chassis stiffening a satisfyingly straightforward form of car modification: bolt the part on, and you don’t necessarily have to replace half the suspension just to make an upgrade.
