Steeda Tri-Ax Race replaces the original Mustang GT shifter assembly. It reduces throw by approximately 30% and lowers the knob by about 25 mm. More rigid mounting and precision bushings reduce play for a more direct shift.

Steeda Mustang GT MT-82 Tri-Ax Race Short Shifter

Adjustable feel

Two medium and two high-resistance return springs are included. Combine them to tailor centring, including an offset spring arrangement to assist the second-to-third shift. Once the base plate is mounted, springs and lever components can be changed from inside the car without removing the entire assembly.

Rigid front mounting and a rear Steeda polyurethane bushing support the unit from both the transmission and chassis. The Steeda base bracket/bushing and Dynamat tunnel insulation are included. Wider low-friction machined bushings replace the original shaft bushings, with stated tolerances down to 0.0005 inch, approximately 0.013 mm.

Materials and retained functions

The body is high-grade aluminium, the lever heat-treated nickel-plated 4140 steel and the hardware stainless steel. Steeda reports approximately 20% lower weight than competing assemblies used for comparison. The original knob thread, pull-up reverse lockout and reversing-camera function are retained. Knob-locking hardware is supplied.

Steeda describes quiet operation in everyday driving, although hard use may produce some additional noise and vibration. The assembly has been tested under load and at elevated temperatures to avoid binding.
